ST. PAUL, Minn. (2/26/23)---A pair of MIAC title winners led Concordia on the final day of the MIAC Indoor Championship Meet. Allyson Kangas and Peyton Selle proved their championship mettle by posting Top 5 finishes, which helped the Cobbers remain in sixth place in the final team standings.
Concordia finished the 3-day conference meet with a total of 53.0 points which was 13 points ahead of seventh-place Macalester. The sixth-place finish is one better than last year when they placed seventh at the conference indoor meet.
Concordia started Sunday in sixth place and was able to stay in the spot thanks to Kangas' fourth-place finish in the shot put and Selle's fifth-place finish in the high jump. Both athletes receive All-Conference Honorable Mention honors in those events after capturing wins in the weight throw for Kangas and the pentathlon for Selle.
Kangas waited for her final attempt of the meet to jump into the Top 5 in the shot put. She qualified for the finals with a mark of 40-07.00 on her final try in the prelims. She then bettered that distance on her sixth throw by coming away with a mark of 40-11.75.
Selle opened Day 3 by finishing fifth in the high jump with a height of 4-11.75 which she cleared on her third, and final, attempt at that height. Her finishing mark tied for the second highest, but she placed because of the number of misses at lower heights during the competition.
Selle also showed off her multi-event skills by posting a seventh-place finish in the long jump. She posted a distance of 16-08.50 on her third attempt. That mark is just shy of her season-best distance she recorded during her pentathlon win.
Selled capped her third indoor conference meet by posting a Top 8 finish in three different events. She was responsible for 20 team points over the course of the meet.
Sophomore Jenna Kalevik and freshman Emily Rengo were the other individuals who scored team points for the Cobbers on Sunday. Kalevik was eighth in the high jump at 4-10.50.
Rengo ran a season-best time of 26.80 in the 200 meters and finished in eighth place. She ended her first MIAC Meet with a pair of Top 8 finishes. She was also sixth in the 60-meter dash.
Concordia's top relay of the day came in the final event of the meet. The 4x400-meter relay squad of Mary Wunderlich, Selle, Meg Shercliffe and Drew Frolek crossed the line in a season-best time of 4:14.56 which earned them a fifth-place finish.
UP NEXT: Concordia's national meet hopefuls will have one more chance to post a qualifying mark when they compete at the Last Chance Qualifier Meet held at Wartburg College on Mar. 3-4.
