ST. PAUL, Minn. (2/25/23)---Senior Allyson Kangas led Concordia at the first day of the MIAC Indoor Championship Meet. Kangas won the weight throw, and was one of three Cobbers to post Top 6 finishes that pushed CC into sixth place in the team standings.
Concordia finished Saturday with 35 team points which is nine ahead of seventh-place Macalester.
Kangas, who entered the event seeded No.2, earned her first-ever MIAC championship by posting a distance of 53-01 on her third throw in the prelims of the event. That mark proved to be her best on the day, and was almost 2-feet farther than the runner-up finisher.
Sophomore Drew Frolek had the other Top 5 finish for CC on Day 1. She ran a 2:21.69 in the 800 meters and placed fourth to score five team points.
The other team-point scorer on the day was freshman Emily Rengo who qualified for the finals of the 60-meter dash with a season-best time of 8.12, and then bettered that in the finals by crossing the line in 8.05. Her time earned her a 6th-place finish which is good for All-Conference Honorable Mention honors.
The Cobbers had a trio of track athletes finish just outside the Top 10 in the 60-meter hurdles. Jenna Kalevik and MIAC pentathlon champion Peyton Selle used their experience from Friday's multi-events to run 9.73 and 9.79. Kalevik's mark of 9.73 was only .21 of a second from qualifying for the finals. Nicole Lilleberg finished 13th with a season-best time of 9.80.
The top field event finisher besides weight-throw winner Kangas was Mary Wunderlich, who placed 12th in the triple jump with a season-best distance of 33-04.75. Liilleberg recorded her second season-best mark of the day when she posted a distance of 33-03.75 and finished right behind Wunderlich in 14th place.
The only relay of the day was the distance medley relay where the CC quartet of Airial Johnson, Wunderlich, Eden Smith and Sophia Revoir clocked a 13:15.61 which was good for fifth place.
