No More Friday Night Magic
Concordia’s offense was unable to duplicate the four-goal outburst from the third period on Friday night and the Cobbers fell 2-0 to Gustavus in St. Peter on Saturday.
ST. PETER, Minn. (1/28/12)—Concordia's offense was unable to duplicate the four-goal outburst from the third period on Friday night and the Cobbers fell 2-0 at Gustavus on Saturday. CC gave up a single goal in each of the first and second periods as they lost for the sixth time in the last eight games.
The Gusties jumped on Concordia in the opening period, outshooting the Cobbers 16-9. They followed that up with a 20-8 advantage in the second period. Gustavus scored the lone goal of the opening period at the 16:19 mark. The goal was the deciding factor in the game as it came when Concordia was on the power play. The Cobbers were given a man advantage at the 15:42 mark and then Ross Ring-Jarvi scored an unassisted goal :37 later. Gustavus opened a two-goal lead in the ninth minute of the second period when Gustav Bengston scored his fourth goal of the year at 8:13.
The Cobbers tried to duplicate their Friday night magic by coming out on the attack in the third period but were unable to get one by Gustavus netminder John McLean. McLean turned aside the seven shots he faced in the third period and all 24 shots thrown at him for the three periods to earn his second shutout of the season.
CC sophomore defenseman Caleb Sudermann led the offensive attack as he registered a team-high four shots on goal. Concordia goalie Chris Neamonitis went the entire three periods and finished with 43 saves on the day. The Cobbers were 0-for-2 on the power play and held the Gusties scoreless in their four power play attempts.
Concordia is now 8-9-4 overall on the year and falls to 4-5-3 in league play. Gustavus climbs to 11-5-3 in all games and 5-4-1 in the MIAC.
The Cobbers will now have a two-week break before returning to action on Feb. 10-11 in a two-game series at Hamline.
