Balanced Attack Powers Cobbers to Halloween Sweep
The Cobber volleyball team turned up the heat on Halloween night, rolling past Hamline in straight sets behind a balanced offensive attack and a standout defensive effort. Concordia controlled the pace from start to finish, claiming a 3–0 (25–22, 25–19, 25–21) win to keep momentum rolling into their weekend matchup with Saint Benedict.
SAINT PAUL, MINN. (10/31/25) – The Cobbers opened set one trading points back and forth with Hamline before an Addy Klemin kill and a pair of Piper errors gave Concordia an early 9–7 advantage. Hamline battled back to even things at nine, but a Betsy Schiltz kill helped the Cobbers regain momentum. The Pipers responded with a 4–0 run to take a 13–10 lead before Schiltz fired off back-to-back kills to tie it once again at 13. From there, both teams continued to exchange points until a Mallory Leitner kill sparked a 5–0 Cobber run, highlighted by a Lexi Lohman ace and an Annie Horan kill, putting Concordia ahead 21–18. That surge carried the Cobbers to the finish, as a Horan kill and a timely Piper error sealed the 25–22 set-one win.
Concordia carried that momentum into set two, jumping out to a quick 7–3 lead behind kills from Leitner, Schiltz, and Lauren Pearson. The Cobbers maintained control throughout the frame, with a Horan kill extending the lead to 15–11. Hamline cut the deficit to one with a short 3–0 run, but Horan ended the rally with a kill that jump-started four straight Cobber points, pushing the score to 19–14. Concordia closed strong with kills from Lauren Bangs and Pearson before Leitner finished it off, 25–19.
The Pipers came out fighting in set three, taking an early 6–2 lead, but a Horan ace once again ignited the Cobber offense. The teams traded points through the middle of the set, with Hamline holding a slim two-point edge several times. Three straight Piper errors swung the momentum back to Concordia, who took an 18–17 lead they wouldn't surrender. A Leitner kill extended the advantage to 21–19, and back-to-back strikes from Leitner and Pearson capped off the sweep as the Cobbers closed out set three, 25–21 — securing a Halloween-night victory in straight sets.
The Cobber offense was well-balanced on the night, with Mallory Leitner, Annie Horan, and Lauren Pearson each recording nine kills. Betsy Schiltz paced the attack with 27 assists and added 14 digs to notch a double-double performance. On defense, Holland Fitterer anchored the back row with a career-high 22 digs, while Kelse Martinie contributed 15 and Lexi Lohman added 12.
Concordia will be back in action tomorrow, traveling to Saint Benedict to take on the Bennies at 5:00 p.m.
