Road Weekend Woes
Concordia dropped a non-conference/conference road weekend as they lost to Division II St. Cloud State on Saturday and MIAC foe St. Mary’s on Sunday.
WINONA, Minn. (3/19/17)--- Concordia dropped a non-conference/conference road weekend as they fell 9-0 to Division II St. Cloud State on Saturday and then 9-0 at MIAC foe St. Mary's on Sunday.
Both matches had at least one close bout as the Cobbers continue to look for their first win of the year. St. Cloud used the win on Saturday to move to 8-5 on the year while St. Mary's is now 6-3 overall and 2-3 in the MIAC.
Concordia kicked off the weekend by playing the Huskies in Sartell. The closest match of the day came at No.5 singles where freshman Mikaila Carney lost in the super-set tie-breaker. Carney started slowly and fell 6-1 in the first set but then responded by claiming a 7-6 win in the second set. Carney was able to send the match to the super set after she prevailed 9-7 in the tie-breaker.
Unfortunately Carney wasn't able to keep the momentum going in the super set and lost 10-3.
The tightest match on Sunday came in doubles play. The Cobber No.2 doubles team of Lisa Neumann and Breann Adamek lost their match in the tie-breaker. They went back-and-forth during the regular eight-game set and sent it to the tie-breaker by evening the match at 8-8. The St. Mary's team would then earn the win with an 8-6 victory in the tie-breaker.
The top two singles matches were hotly contested. Neumann fell 6-3, 6-3 at No.1 singles and junior Kendra Stoick lost 6-2, 6-2 in the second singles spot.
WHAT'S NEXT: Concordia will have another conference/non-conference road trip next weekend when they travel to southern Minnesota. The Cobbers will play Macalester on Saturday, Mar. 25 at 2:30 p.m. at the Lifetime Fitness Center in Lakeville and then travel to St. Peter to play Bethany Lutheran on Sunday, Mar. 26 at 12:30 at the Swanson Tennis Center on the campus of Gustavus.
