MOORHEAD, Minn. (9/14/22)----A goal in the final 2-minutes of the first half was the deciding factor in Concordia's conference opener.
The Cobbers battled Macalester throughout the full 90 minutes, but conceded a goal at the 43:44 mark and lost 1-0.
The defeat ends the Cobbers' 3-game win streak, and drops their overall record to 3-2-0 on the year. The Scots remain unbeaten on the year and move to 4-0-2. They haven't allowed a goal in their 540 minutes of play this season.
Both teams had one quality chance in the first half before Macalester struck for the game-winning goal. Concordia's chance came at the 21-minute mark when sophomore Chloe Sollom took a pass from Hannah Mukhtar at the top of the penalty area, executed a perfect first touch to get the ball behind the last Scot's defender and set up a shot from 12 yards out. Sollom had to reach for the ball on the shot and she barely missed the top corner of the net.
Concordia's other chance at net in the first 45 minutes came via a dead ball from 45 yards out of goal. The Cobbers were going with a 10-15 mph win in the first half which allowed Sophia Robinson to have a legitimate chance at the net. Her shot just drifted over the bar after it had the Scot's goalie beaten over the top.
The majority of Concordia's shots came in the first half. The Scots dropped another player on to their back line in the second half to protect the 1-goal lead. The Cobbers had six total shots in the game with four coming in the first period of play.
Macalester held an 11-6 advantage in total shots for the game and a 4-2 edge in shots on goal. Concordia took all three of their corners in the game in the first half, while the Scots were held without a corner in the first period but had two in the second half.
Concordia goalie Kaitlin Petrich made three saves in the game.
UP NEXT: The Cobbers will travel to Duluth to take on St. Scholastica on Saturday, Sept. 17 at 1 p.m. The Saints are 1-4-0 on the year and dropped their MIAC opener at Gustavus on Wednesday.
