Acuna And Major Lead Cobbers On Day 1 At NCAA Region Meet
Chris Acuna and Jack Major led Concordia on Day 1 at the NCAA Region VII Meet. Both wrestlers advanced to the semifinals of their weight classes and are one win away from qualifying for the NCAA Championship Meet.
EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (2/27/26)—Chris Acuna and Jack Major led Concordia on Day 1 at the NCAA Region VII Meet. Both wrestlers advanced to the semifinals of their weight classes and are one win away from qualifying for the NCAA Championship Meet.
Overall, the Cobbers still have six of their 10 wrestlers still alive in hope of finishing in the Top 3 of their weight class and making it to the national meet.
As a team, Concordia scored 55.5 points on Day 1 and sit in sixth place in the overall standings. They are only 1.0 point out of the Top 5.
Acuna, who entered the meet ranked 15th in DIII at 157, opened his first college region meet by recording a pin in the first period over Josiah Solliday from St. John's. He added a second pin on the day in the quarterfinals when he beat Ben Messier from Milwaukee School of Engineering.
Acuna is now 23-7 on the year and will face Karsen Otis from Augsburg in the semifinals. The winner of that match will qualify for nationals. Acuna and Otis recently squared off Against each other in a dual meet on Feb. 13 and Acuna was able to come away with a 4-3 decision.
Major advanced to the semifinals for the first time in his college career in the 141-lb weight class. Major received a bye in the first round and then dispatched Ty Fink of Wis.-Eau Claire in the quarterfinals with an 11-4 decision.
Major (19-13) will meet No.10-ranked Cole Becker of Augsburg in the semifinals. The two also squared off in the Cobber/Auggie dual in February with Becker posting a 15-6 major decision win.
Seniors Kie Anderson and Mason Swanson were the other two wrestlers who are still alive for Concordia that lost in the quarterfinals.
Anderson opened his regional account with a pin over Tyson Bruce of Augustana (Ill.) in the 125-lb bracket. He lost a nail-biting 4-3 decision to Wyatt Magolski from Wis.- La Crosse in the quarters before bouncing back to pin Evan Glowinski in the second round of the wrestlebacks.
Swanson also opened with a win and then suffered a loss in the quarters. He started at 285 with a disqualification victory over Ezekiel Conner then fell 17-5 to Elijah Osit in the quarterfinals. Swanson then started his trip to a potential third-place finish by beating Ruben Vasquez of Concordia (Wis.) 8-2.
Hunter Mars and Will Freking are the other two CC wrestlers still alive.
Mars fell in the opener at 125 but then was the recipient of good fortune as he won his next two matches by medical forfeit and injury default.
Freking lost his first match of the day at 197. He dropped a 15-0 tech fall decision to No.7-ranked Ethan Winkelman of Augsburg. Freking rallied to post a major decision win over Gavin Graham from MSOE.
The six Cobbers will return to the regional mat in Eau Claire on Saturday, Feb. 28 at 11 a.m.
