PROVIDENCE, R.I. (3/14/25)---One journey continued and another ended for senior Ty Bisek and junior Aidan Ruddy at the NCAA Championship Meet.
Bisek came through with three wins on Day 1 to earn his second All-American honor and advance to the consolation podium round at 141. He became only the fifth Cobber to earn multiple NCAA All-American honors in program history and the first to accomplish the feat since Jake Long in 2013 and 2014.
Ruddy had a couple of hard-fought battles at 149 but lost twice in his very first national meet appearance.
Bisek, who was the No.4 seed entering the tournament, got off to a terrific start by posting a 15-0 tech fall win over Andrew Loniewski of Muhlenberg in the opener. He did that win one better by getting a pin over Tommy Thongseng of Wartburg.
Bisek's quarterfinal match against No.5-seeded Mark Samuel of Roanoke turned into one of the wildest bout of the day. Bisek gave up a pair of takedowns early and trailed heading into the second and third periods. He then staged a late-match point frenzy that featured several reversals and near falls. In the end, time ran out on Bisek and he lost his first match of the year by a score of 13-11.
Bisek responded in true All-American fashion. He came away with a 14-3 major decision over Jake Eckerle of Johnson & Wales in the "All-American" match. With the win, Bisek is guaranteed to finish no lower than eighth place.
Bisek is now 27-1 on the season in contested matches.
He will face eighth-seeded Luke Hoerle of Stevens in his opening match on Day 2. Bisek needs three wins to post a third-place finish at the national meet.
Ruddy's best match of the day came in the Round of 16 at 149. After receiving a bye in the first round, Ruddy faced No.3-seed and returning All-American, Colby Frost of Southern Maine.
Ruddy and Frost got locked in a back-and-forth battle that was decided by a mere two points. Ruddy ended up losing 8-6, with Frost earning the bonus point for riding time to turn the 7-6 score into the 2-point final.
Ruddy had a bit of bad luck in his first consolation match as he had to face the fifth seed and 2023 All-American Thomas Monn of McDaniel after Monn was upset in the first round.
Ruddy was never able to get ahead of Monn and ended up losing 14-6.
Ruddy finished his first national meet campaign with an 18-12 overall record.
