Cobbers Never Trail In Series Finale With St. Catherine
The Concordia-Moorhead women’s hockey team earned a hard-fought 4–2 home victory over St. Catherine on Saturday, using late-game execution to secure the win.
MOORHEAD, Minn. (1/31/26) – Concordia never trailed in its series with St. Catherine and earned a hard-fought 4–2 home victory over the Wildcats on Saturday.
The opening period was scoreless as both goaltenders stood strong. Abby Huselid made several key saves early to keep the game even, while the Cobbers generated steady offensive pressure but were unable to break through. Concordia killed off the game's first power play midway through the period, and the teams headed to the first intermission tied 0–0.
The Cobbers struck first early in the second period. At 9:02, Anna Nelson netted her seventh goal of the season at even strength, finishing a setup from Taylor Severson and Madilyn Skogman to give Concordia a 1–0 lead.
St. Catherine answered just over a minute later to tie the game, but Concordia regained momentum on the power play. With 5:34 remaining in the period, Memphis Mertens scored a power-play goal off assists from Addie Moos and Kylie Huseth, sending the Cobbers into the second intermission with a 2–1 advantage.
St. Catherine evened the score early in the third period, setting the stage for a tightly contested final frame. Concordia responded with strong puck possession and capitalized on another power-play opportunity. At 15:19, Taylyn Cope scored the game-winning goal with the man advantage, assisted by Nelson and Jaclyn Lloyd, putting the Cobbers ahead 3–2.
After St. Catherine pulled its goalie and briefly cut into the deficit, Concordia sealed the win with an empty-net goal from Cope at 18:27, her second goal of the game and team-leading 10th of the season, to make it 4–2.
Huselid was solid in net for the Cobbers, finishing with 30 saves and turning aside numerous scoring chances to help Concordia control the pace late. Cope led the Cobbers with two goals, while Nelson added one goal and one assist, and Mertens finished with one goal.
The Cobbers will stay at home next weekend when they host league-leading Hamline on Feb. 6-7.
