MOORHEAD, Minn. (1/17/24)---Taylyn Cope's goal with 6:43 left in the third period lifted Concordia to a 3-2 win over St. Scholastica in the first game of the series between the teams.
Cope's game-winning strike capped a wild final period that saw the Saints erase a 2-goal deficit in a span of 39 seconds after the Cobbers had dominated the first two periods of play and built a 2-0 lead.
The victory is the second in four games for Concordia, who is now 3-11-0 in all games and 2-5-0 in the MIAC. St. Scholastica has its 1-game win streak come to an end and is 2-12-0 overall and remains winless at 0-7-0 in conference play.
Concordia held a decided advantage in shots on goal and offensive zone time in the game, but their effort was done in by a 39-second at the start of the third period.
The teams skated through a scoreless 20 minutes of play to start the game with CC holding an 11-9 advantage in shots on goal.
Taylor Severson broke the deadlock at 8:04 of the second stanza after she took a pass from Cope and fired home a shot over the right shoulder of the Saints' netminder.
The strike was Severson's first of the season.
First-year forward Madilyn Skogman doubled the Cobbers' lead when she finished off a textbook 2-on-1 in the final three minutes of the middle frame. Senior Jerica Friese lifted a perfect saucer pass over the lone defenseman's stick and right onto Skogman's blade. Skogman settled the puck and beat the goalie to the left post with her shot.
The goal at 17:05 was Skogman's third of the year. Friese earned her third assist of the season and Sophie Hauer was also credited with an assist on the play. The assist moves Friese into the team lead of points with nine.
The Saints completely flipped the game around with their 2-goal spree at 4:08 and 4:47 of the final period.
The score would stay tied at 2-2 until Cope found herself all alone with the puck on top of the CSS crease. She made sure her 1-time shot found the back of the net as she snapped home the winner at 13:17.
Junior Jaclyn Lloyd set up the game-winning goal when she beat the Saints' defense around the right wing and cut to the net. As she was playing the puck to her backhand, it slid away from her stick and found Cope who was camped at the top of the crease.
Concordia killed off the game by keeping the puck in the St. Scholastica zone. The Saints weren't able to pull their goalie at the end of the game because the Cobbers posted an extended amount of time in their offensive zone.
The Cobbers finished the game by outshooting the Saints 45-21. Skogman led all players with eight shots on goal.
Concordia goalie Ashlea Arvidson, who transferred from St. Scholastica after last season, earned the win against her former team by turning aside 19 shots.
The Cobbers will look for the sweep of the 2-game series when the teams faceoff at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 18.
