Goalmouth Scrambles Give Cobbers Overtime Win
Concordia used a pair of goalmouth scramble goals to overcome a 1-0 deficit and beat St. Mary’s 2-1 in overtime in the opener of the 2-game series.
MOORHEAD, Minn. (12/06/24)---Concordia used a pair of goalmouth scramble goals to overcome a 1-0 deficit and beat St. Mary's 2-1 in overtime in the opener of the 2-game series.
The Cobbers trailed 1-0 after the first period but then got a goal from senior Jerica Friese midway through the second period to tie the score. Junior transfer forward Memphis Mertens was in the right place at the right time to tap home the game-winning goal at the 51-second mark of the overtime period.
The win is the first of the year for Concordia, which ends its 4-game losing streak and is now 1-4-0. St. Mary's has its 5-game win streak come to a halt. The Cardinals are now 7-4-0 in all games and 2-3-0 in the MIAC.
One of the stars of the game for the Cobbers was senior goalie Ashlea Arvidson. She made several point-blank stops throughout the third period to keep CC close and get them to the overtime frame.
Arvidson finished with 32 saves in the game. It's the second time in the last three games she has turned aside at least 30 shots.
St. Mary's took the 1-0 lead at 15:02 of the first period. The goal came on the power play after the Cobbers were whistled for a tripping penalty at the 14:48 mark.
The game would stay at 1-0 until 11:37 of the second period when Friese converted the first scramble in front of the SMU goal. The puck sitting just outside the St. Mary's crease when Friese slammed at the puck and sent it off a Cardinals' defensive player. It then slid along the goal line and went into the goal after it hit the SMU goalie in the pad.
The unassisted strike was Friese's first of the season and 36th of her career.
Neither team could find the net in the final 20 minutes of regulation with the Cobbers holding a 9-8 advantage in shots on goal.
One of the key plays in the game came when the Cardinals were whistled for having too many players on the ice which gave CC a power play with 1:44 left to go in the third period.
Concordia wasn't able to score on the power play in regulation but the player advantage gave the Cobbers a chance to set up in the offensive zone to start the overtime period.
Concordia didn't score on the 14 seconds worth of power play in OT, but kept the puck in the SMU zone and eventually fired the puck on net from the left faceoff circle. The puck hit a pile of players in front and the St. Mary's goalie appeared to have fallen on the puck, but it squirted free and slid to the back post where Mertens was waiting to tap home the winner.
The goal at 0:51 of overtime was Mertens first as a Cobber.
Concordia finished with 24 shots on goal and was led by junior Morgan Sauvageau who put four shots on net. She leads the team with 13 shots on goal this season.
The Cobbers will look for the sweep of the 2-game series when they square off against St. Mary's on Saturday, Dec. 7 at 2 p.m.
