Mohr Is Not Enough Against #9 Hamline
Junior Megan Mohr had the only goal for Concordia in their 6-1 loss to No.9-ranked Hamline.
MOORHEAD. Minn. (1/25/20)---Concordia found at why Hamline advanced to the national championship game last season and is ranked No.9 in DIII this season. The Pipers scored five straight goals to start the game and beat the Cobbers 6-1.
The loss marks only the second time all season that the Cobbers have been swept in a conference series. Concordia is now 5-12-0 overall and 3-7-0 in MIAC play. Hamline, who hasn't lost since December, runs its win streak to nine games and is now 13-3-1 in all games and 9-1-0 in league games.
The Pipers scored twice in the first period and then three more times in the second frame before Megan Mohr got Concordia on the board in the first five minutes of the third period.
Mohr recorded her third goal of the year when the Cobbers were staked to their third power play of the game. She was able to get the puck past the HU goalie at the 4:55 mark with assists going to Ally Wiitala and Libby Hinrichs.
Mohr's goal tied her career high for goals in a single season. She also had three goals last season I her sophomore year.
Hamline then responded with a power play goal of their own at 7:37 to finish off the score sheet.
Cobber freshman goalie Kiana Flaig had another solid game between the pipes as she stopped 44 shots and finished with 80 saves for the weekend.
Concordia went 1-for-6 on the power play while the CC penalty kill units held Hamline to only one goal in five extra skater chances.
The Cobbers had three players with two shots on goal. Amanda Flemming, Mackenzie Bergstrom and McKenzie Oelkers all had a pair of shots to lead Concordia.
INSIDE STAT INFO: The Cobbers turned the ball over 24 times against the Auggies. That is the second-highest total in a conference game this year. Concordia is now 1-5 when they have at least 20 turnovers in a league game this year.
ONE STREAK ENDED, ANOTHER ONE STARTED: Concordia's power play goal in the third period ended a steak of 16 straight power play chances without a goal in a streak that covered five games.
UP NEXT: The Cobbers will hit the road for the first time in 2020 when they play at Bethel on Jan. 31-Feb.1. The Royals are 5-12-0 in all games and 3-7-0 in the MIAC. Bethel is coming off a split against St. Mary's.
