Tangled Up In Blue

Concordia ran into a red-hot goalie and was blanked 2-0 in the series finale against Northland.

MOORHEAD, Minn. (10/28/17)--- Less than 24 hours after scoring five goals in their season-opening win, the Cobbers ran into a red-hot goalie and were blanked 2-0 in the series finale against Northland.

Concordia fired up 35 shots on goal and outshot the Lumberjills 35-15 but couldn't find a way past the Northland goalie and lost for the first time in the 2017-18 season.

The Cobbers held a decided edge in shots in the first and third periods but each team had seven shots in the second period which decided the game. The lone non-empty net goal came in the fourth minute of the period and proved to be the eventual game winner.

Concordia dominated the third period and had the puck in the Lumberjill end for the majority of the period. The Cobbers had numerous point blank chances and were robbed each time. The most unbelievable stop came after the Cobbers had the puck deep in the Northland end. A pass across the goal crease found senior Tori Davis wide open on the back post. Davis then one-timed a shot that appeared to be labeled for the goal. Unfortunately for Concordia the Northland goalie slid across the length of the goal, kicked out her left leg and stopped the shot before it crossed the goal line.

The second golden opportunity cam minutes later when Amanda Flemming found herself in the exact same spot. This time Flemming tried to go up high to get the puck over the goalie's leg. Once again the shot appeared to be headed for the back of the net but the Lumberjill goalie unreeled her glove and stopped the puck. The rebound came right back to Flemming who slammed a shot on the ice but the goalie once again kicked out her pad to stop the game-tying attempt.

Northland added an empty-net goal in the final minute of play as Concordia was pushing players forward to try and tie the game.

Concordia outshot the Lumberjills 13-2 in the first period and 15-6 in the third period and came away with a 35-15 overall margin.

Flemming led Concordia for the second straight game and came away with eight shots on goal. She recorded 19 shots on goal in the two-game series.

Davis had five shots on goal and Sage Barta recorded four shots.

Amy Jost made 14 saves in her first start in a Cobber uniform.

WHAT'S NEXT: Concordia will have a two-week break before opening conference play at home against St. Catherine on Nov. 10-11.
