High Octane Offense

ALEXANDRIA, Minn. (11/12/16)--- Concordia started its series with St. Benedict by scoring five goals in the opening period. The Cobbers bookended the series with four goals in the third period on Saturday but It was an overtime goal by senior Ellen Rethwisch that sparked Concordia to a high-scoring 7-6 win over the Blazers.

The Cobbers trailed 4-2 heading into the third period in the second game of the series but then scored four goals in the first 8:21 of the period to take a 6-4 lead.

The game turned in St. Benedict's favor in the final five minutes of regulation as they scored at the 15;11 mark and then got the game-tying goal at 19:13 after they had pulled their goalie for an extra attacker.

Rethwisch won the game in the final minute of overtime when she scored her second goal of the game.

The win keeps Concordia unbeaten on the year. The Cobbers move to 3-0-1 overall and 2-0-0 in MIAC play. The Blazers have their record evened at 2-2-0 on the year.

Rethwisch was one of three Concordia players to score two goals in the game.  Senior Jess Nelson continued her scorching scoring spree with goals in the second and third periods. She now has five goals in the first four games of the year and Jessie Kongelf netted her first two goals of the year in the third period.

The teams skated to a 1-1 deadlock after one period of play. The Blazers took a 1-0 lead at 14:42 and then Amber Schaack tied the game with her second goal of the weekend at 16:01. It was one of four power play goals in the game for CC.

St. Benedict appeared to break the game open in the second period. They scored three times to grab a 4-2 lead. Nelson recorded the only goal of the period for CC. Rethwisch picked the assist as she had a three-point afternoon.

Concordia's four-goal game changer started at 2:53 of the third. Nelson put up her second goal to bring the Cobbers within one at 4-3. Concordia then lit up the scoreboard for three goals in 41 seconds.

Kongelf scored at 7:40 on the power play to tie the game at 4-4. Rethwisch then followed with another power play goal at 8:11 before Kongelf gave the Cobbers a 6-4 lead with a tally at 8:21.

Concordia held a 2-to-1 advantage in shots on goal. The Cobbers had 20 shots in the second period alone and finished with 56 total shots. The Blazers finished with 23 shots in the game.

Rethwisch finished with a career-high 11 shots while Schaack finished with 10. 

Cobber netminder Andrea Klug made 17 saves to remain unbeaten on the season.  

SPEEDY THREE: Concordia's three goals in a span of 41 seconds in the third period is the fastest three-goal outburst in program history.

SHOOT: Concordia's 56 shots on goal is a season high and the most since they put up 60 in a game in 2001 against St. Olaf.

WHAT'S NEXT: Concordia will stay on the road and stay in conference play when they head to St. Paul to take on St. Catherine in a two-game series at Drake Arena on Nov. 19-20. The Wildcats are 2-4 on the year and lost a pair of games to Augsburg in their conference-opening weekend.
