JAMESTOWN, N.D. (2/21/25)---Concordia kicked off its 2025 season by splitting a pair of games against NAIA opponents at the Jamestown Nelson Family Bubble Tournament.
The Cobbers opened the year by beating Valley City State 3-1 and then fell 12-6 to Dickinson State in the day's nightcap.
The win over the Vikings marked the first collegiate victory for head coach Annika Seedborg who took over the program last summer.
Game 1: Concordia 3, Valley City State
In addition to the initial win for Seedborg it was another pair of newcomers who keyed the win for Concordia. Sophomore transfer pitcher Bayleigh Frye pitched a complete-game, 3-hitter to secure her first victory in maroon and gold while first-year outfielder Lily Heskin drove in two of the team's three runs and also scored once.
The first game of the day wasn't settled until the seventh inning. Both teams were able to scratch out a single run in the fifth inning before the Cobbers struck for the decisive two runs in the top of the seventh.
Senior Emma Bowman led off the fifth with a triple to left field and scored when Heskin grounded out to shortstop in the very next at-bat.
The Vikings matched Concordia's one run in the bottom of the fifth to set the stage for the seventh frame.
Catcher Kate Gulbranson opened the seventh with a double and advanced to third base on a sacrifice bunt from Emma Bowman. Heskin drove in game-winning run with a bunt single. She then advanced to third base on a wild pitch and scored on an infield ground ball off the bat of Kailee Falconer.
The three runs would be all that Frye needed. She didn't give up more than one hit in a single inning and only allowed two runners to get past second base the entire game.
Frye finished the opener by pitching all 7.0 innings. She allowed only three hits and struck out five.
The Cobbers outhit Valley City 4-3 with Heskin, Gulbranson, Bowman and Brooklyn Hofer all recording a single hit. Hofer's double in the sixth inning was her first collegiate hit.
Game 2: Concordia 6, Dickinson State 12
Concordia fell behind early in the second game against a Dickinson St. team that had already played nine games. The Blue Hawks scored the first five runs in the game to force the Cobbers chase the game.
Concordia was able to cut the lead to 8-5 with a 4-run fourth inning but then gave up four runs in the final three frames and lost by six.
The Cobbers had eight hits in the finale and were led by junior Reese Hauck. Hauck had three hits in the game and came away with the team's first homer of the year. She was responsible for all four runs when she connected on a pitch with the bases loaded and drove it over the left-field fence.
The long ball was Hauck's second of her career and second in the last five games as she went yard in CC's third-to-last game in the 2024 season.
Hofer and Bowman also had hits in Game 2 as they were the lone Concordia hitters to get a base knock in both games.
Senior Danielle Lyon came through with her first hit of the year while CC newcomers Corra Utash and Morgan Guggisberg recorded their first collegiate hits.
Concordia used three pitchers in Game 2 with Mallory Leitner getting the start and lasting 2.0 innings. Lauren Staples pitched the following 2.0 frames and Kegen Coulson went 3.0 innings in her first collegiate appearance.
Concordia will finish off the Jamestown tournament when they play the University of Mary and host Jimmies on Saturday, Feb. 22 at 6:30 and 8:30 p.m.
