Dropped Doubleheader Against St. Olaf
MOORHEAD, Minn. (4/18/18)---Concordia continued its three conference home doubleheaders in three games streak as they dropped a pair of game against St. Olaf.
The Cobbers had a 2-0 lead erased in the first game and lost 5-3 and then gave up a pair of five-run innings late in the second game and lost 11-1.
The day started out on a positive note when Concordia plated two runs in the second inning of Game 1. The Cobbers scored the first run after Elizabeth Asp walked to lead off the inning and then scored on an error which sent Brooke Ankerfelt to second base. CC then loaded the bases on a walk and a hit by pitch and then Kayla Nack was hit by another pitch to drive in the second run of the frame.
Concordia (4-18/0-10 MIAC) held the lead until the fourth inning when St. Olaf (15-11/5-5 MIAC) scored twice on four hits in the fourth. CC then gave up the game-winning run on a double steal with runners on first and third in the fifth inning.
The Cobbers scored their final run of the game in the seventh inning after they trailed 5-2. Taylor Erholtz led off the frame with a double to right center and then scored on a ground ball to second base off the bat of Nack.
Erholtz and Abby Haraldson had the only two hits in the first game for CC. Haraldson also went the distance in the circle. She gave up nine hits and three earned runs and struck out six.
The second game was a scoreless affair until the fourth inning until the teams swapped one-run frames. It appeared the game would be close until the end until the Oles scored five times in the fifth and then five more in the seventh to bring the final total to 11-1.
The Cobbers got their lone run when they tied the game in the fourth after Nicole Johannes walked to lead off the inning and then came around to score on a double by Asp.
Concordia ran into fielding problems in the late innings. CC had a chance to get out of the fifth unscathed but an error with two outs opened the scoring door and St. Olaf proceeded to score five times with two outs. The same scenario played out in the seventh when the Cobbers got a pair of outs but then two errors let St. Olaf score four extra times.
Asp, Ankerfelt and Karina Rice had the base knocks for the Cobbers in Game 2.
Freshman Megan Gavin started the game for CC and went the first 5.0 innings. She only allowed one earned run and struck out five. Kelly Riordan finished off the game and gave up one earned run and five hits in the final two frames.
