Clutch Hits Elude Cobbers

ST. PAUL, Minn. (4/08/17)--- Concordia couldn't come up with a clutch hit with runners on base and were shut out twice  at Macalester.

The Cobbers went 1-for-17 (.058) with runners on base and 1-for-12 (.083) with two outs in an inning as they fell 3-0 and 8-0 to the Scots.

Concordia has now lost 10 straight after they fashioned a five-game win streak. CC is 8-16 overall and 0-8 in the MIAC. Macalester wins for the third time in the last four games and is now 16-10 in all games and 4-4 in league play.

Kelly Riordan pitched well in the first game for the Cobbers as she allowed a single run in the first inning and then retired nine of the next 11 batters before allowing a pair of runs in the fifth. Riordan finished the game by allowing six hits in 6.0 innings of work and only gave up two walks.

Concordia had runners on first and second in the fourth and sixth innings but couldn't come up with the clutch hit.

The Cobbers had at least one runner on base in every inning except the first in the second game.

Concordia trailed 3-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth but then allowed three in the fifth and two in the sixth and lost by eight.

Sophomore Cora Zackrison had a hit in each game for the Cobbers. She went 1-for-3 in each game. CC had five hits in the opener and then four in the second game.

Madison Little, Devonie Smith, Lexi Olek and Brooke Ankerfelt had the other hits for the Cobbers in the first game while Sydney Roberts, Olivia Lien and Kendra Spindler had base knocks in the finale.

The usually dependable Concordia running game hit a snag on Saturday. CC went 0-for-3 in stolen base attempts on the day.  

WHAT'S NEXT: The Cobbers will stay in the Twin Cities and play at Bethel on Sunday, Apr. 9 at 1 p.m. The Royals were swept by St. Catherine on Saturday and are 7-12 overall and 3-4 in the MIAC.
