GENEVA, Ohio (5/22/25)---It was a busy Day 1 for the Cobbers at the NCAA National Outdoor Championship Meet.
First-year athlete Tommy Schreiner earned All-American Second Team honors in the long jump, sophomore Brady Goss qualified for the finals in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and senior Cooper Folkestad kicked off his fifth national meet appearance.
Schreiner became the first Concordia to earn All-American honors in the outdoor long jump and first overall Cobber Outdoor All-American since 2021 when Jesse Middendorf finished eighth in the 800 meters.
Schreiner claimed his All-American honor by finishing 11th in the long jump. The NCAA started giving All-American Second Team honors to finishers ninth through 16th place at the start of the 2024 indoor championship meet. Before 2024, it was only the Top 8 finishers at nationals who earned All-American honors.
Schreiner didn't show any nerves on the national stage as he posted his top mark of the day in his very first attempt. Schreiner recorded a distance of 23-0.75. That mark was only 3.25 inches away from qualifying for the finals in the event.
Schreiner's distance was just shy of his qualifying mark of 23-10.25, which he set on May 3 at the Cobber Open.
Goss put his national indoor meet experience behind him by going out and posting one of the automatic-qualifying spots in the steeplechase. The Top 4 finishers in the two heats automatically qualified for the finals, as well as the runners with the four next fastest times.
Goss cruised to a time of 8:52.97 in the first heat of the prelims, which was good for third place in the heat and also the third fastest qualifying time of all 22 competitors.
Goss was seeded No.1 in the event heading into nationals after clocking a school-record time of 8:46.29 at the MIAC Championship Meet.
Goss will go for All-American honors when he competes in the finals of the steeplechase on Friday, May 22 at 3:40 p.m.
Folkestad, who is a 2-time Indoor All-American, competed in the first of two events at the NCAA Outdoor Meet. Folkestad opened the meet by competing in the discus and finished in 19th place. Folkestad's best distance came on his second throw as he recorded a mark of 138-06.
Folkestad will look to earn indoor and outdoor All-American honors in the shot put when he steps into the circle on Friday, May 23 at 10:30 a.m.
