Bandaged Schepp Wins MIAC High Jump
Jackson Schepp won the high jump on the first day of the MIAC Championship Meet and helped the Cobbers move into fifth place.
ST. PAUL, Minn. (5/12/17)---Staked to a 16-point advantage by the team's multi-eventers last weekend, Jackson Schepp won the high jump to earn 10 team points and Concordia is in fifth place after Day 1 at the MIAC Championship Meet.
The Cobbers have a total of 27 team points after the first day at Hamline which is two points behind fourth-place St. Olaf and nine points clear of fifth-place Carleton.
Schepp was Concordia's lone individual scorer for the day but plenty of other CC athletes qualified for the finals of track events on Saturday.
Schepp, with his upper right leg heavily bandaged due to an in jury earlier in the season, cleared 6-06 in the high jump. He won the event on his very first attempt at 6-06 after narrowly clearing his final attempt at 6-04.75. Schepp was one of only two athletes in the competition to clear 6-04.75.
Schepp's winning mark of 6-06 is a season best and only one inch shy of his personal best which he set at last year's conference meet.
Concordia's other team point on the day came from the 4x800 relay team of David Supinski, Nick Solheim, Brandon Quibell and Matthew Lillehaugen who crossed the line in 7:53.02 which was good for eighth place. Their finishing time is the fifth fastest in school history.
Supinski and Lillehaugen were two of four track athletes who qualified for finals on Saturday. Supinski put up a career-best time in the second heat of the 400-meter prelims and qualified for the finals with the fourth fastest time. Supinski clocked a 48.81 which is a career best and the second fastest time in school history. He was only .28 of a second behind the school record set in 1984.
Lillehaugen continued his rock-solid senior season by qualifying for the finals in the 1500 meters. Lillehaugen had the second fastest qualifying time among the 28 competitors. He was able to cruise down the stretch knowing he was among the Top 5 from his heat which qualified for the finals. His finishing time was 4:06.57.
Willie Julkes III and Matt Bye hurdled their way to spots in the finals. Both freshmen qualified in the 110-meter hurdles. Julkes ran the third fastest time on the day when he clocked a 15.81 to win the third heat. Bye was in the very first heat and placed third with a qualifying time of 15.87.
