Season-Long Storyline On Repeat At Dakota Wesleyan
The season-long storyline repeated itself for the Cobbers at Dakota Wesleyan – Leo Dunor scored, and goalie Jensen Waltz stopped a penalty shot as Concordia beat the Tigers 2-1.
MITCHELL, S.D. (9/18/23)---The season-long storyline repeated itself for the Cobbers at Dakota Wesleyan – Leo Dunor scored, and goalie Jensen Waltz stopped a penalty shot.
The two reoccurring feats helped Concordia post a 2-1 win over the Tigers in Mitchell, S.D. The victory is the fourth of the year for CC and improves their overall record to 4-3-0 on the season.
THE 411: Concordia scored a goal in each half, allowed the game-tying goal in the 73rd minute of play before Dunor notched the game-winner with 7:37 left in the second half.
Gannon Brooks opened the scoring for Concordia in the fourth minute of play when he posted his second goal of the season. Waltz kept the sore in the Cobbers' favor when he stopped a penalty kick at the 23:52 mark.
Concordia went into protect mode in the second part of the second half as they held on to the 1-0 lead. Dakota Wesleyan was able to tie the score at 72:44 on a cross from the left wing. Dunor sealed the non-conference win for the Cobbers when he poached his fifth goal of the year at 82:23.
THE NEXT LEVEL: Dunor has now scored three of Concordia's four game-winning goals. That total is tied for the MIAC lead and tied for seventh in all of Division III. Dunor's five total goals are tied for second in the conference, and his 12 total points are tied for third.
The Cobbers have conceded four penalty kicks on the season, and CC opponents have yet to score on any spot kick. Waltz has stopped three PKs, and the fourth clattered off the post. The three penalty stops lead Division III and also the MIAC. Waltz also made a career-high 10 saves and has 40 for the season. That total is second in the conference.
THE NEXT LEVEL 2.0: The combination of Dunor and Brooks scoring goals continues another season storyline for CC. The trio of Dunor, Brooks and Owen Gallo have combined for 10 of the team's 13 goals for the season.
THE NEXT LEVEL 3.0: Concordia has won four games this season, and three have come via the 2-1 score line.
THE NUMBERS GAME: Concordia was outshot 11-7 in shots on frame and 23-15 in total shots. Both teams had four corners.
INDIVIDUALLY SPEAKING: Dunor led the CC offense with four total shots and two on goal. He has a team-best 25 shots this year, which are second-most in the MIAC. Brooks had three shots.
UP NEXT: Concordia will return to conference play when they host Macalester on Saturday, Sept. 23 at 1 p.m. The Scots are 4-1-2 overall, 1-1-0 in the MIAC and currently ranked No.23 in the latest USC DIII national poll.
