Fitzgerald Earns MIAC Weekly Honor

MOORHEAD, Minn. (2/20/23)---Concordia junior goalie Matt Fitzgerald (Bemidji, Minn.) was named the MIAC Defensive Player of the Week after stopping 68 of the 70 shots he faced in the Cobbers' playoff-clinching sweep at St. Mary's.
Fitzgerald becomes the second Concordia player, and goalie, to win the conference weekly honor. Aaron Dickstein was named the MIAC Defensive Player of the Week on Dec. 5.
Fitzgerald's stellar play in goal has coincided with Concordia's successful drive to the playoffs. Fitzgerald started the final 10 games in goal for the Cobbers, and the team went 7-2-1 during that stretch. In those 10 games, Fitzgerald has a 2.18 goals against average and a 91.9% save percentage. He has also allowed two or fewer goals in 7 of those 10 games.
Fitzgerald started the weekend by turning aside 38 of the 39 shots he faced in Concordia's 7-1 win over the Cardinals on Friday. He backed that up by making 30 stops in Saturday's 4-1 victory.
The two wins helped the Cobbers secure their 10th straight MIAC playoff appearance, and earn the No.4 seed in the upcoming conference tournament.
Fitzgerald and Concordia will be looking to continue their success when they host St. Olaf on Thursday, Feb. 23 at 7 p.m. in the first round of the MIAC playoffs.
