MOORHEAD, Minn. (01/23/22)---The 2022 Concordia "Bob Dylan – The Times They Are A-Changing" tour continued on Sunday against perennial MIAC power Carleton.
Concordia traded punches with the Knights for the first 36-minutes of their conference match-up on Sunday. The Cobbers even took the lead on all the judges' cards when freshman Rowan Nelson buried a 3-pointer to give CC a 75-72 lead with 4:41 left in regulation. Unfortunately, the veteran Carleton squad relied on its late-game experience, outscored Concordia 15-0 in the final 3:50 and escaped with an 87-75 win.
The second game of the season series featured 10 lead changes and 14 tie scores which is in complete contrast to the first game between the teams that had the Knights lead from wire-to-wire and win by 39 points.
Concordia (4-8, 3-6 MIAC) matched the second highest scoring offense in the conference threat-by-threat and double-digit scorer for double-digit scorer. Both teams finished with four of their starting players in double figures in points – and both squads had a 20-point player.
The difference on the day proved to be the Knights' ability to consistently knock down shots from distance in both halves.
Carleton (12-3, 10-1 MIAC), who entered the day having won five straight and was second in the league in both points scored and 3-point field goal percentage, finished the game by shooting a season-best 61.5% (16-for-26) from 3-point range. The Knights' first six points of their 15-0 run at the end came courtesy of the 3-ball. Carleton then made eight consecutive free throws in the final 1:32 to seal the win.
The Cobbers finished the game by shooting 45.0% (27-for-60) from the floor and 36.4% (8-for-22) from distance. CC was also 13-for-17 from the foul line.
Concordia was outrebounded 30-27 in the game but held a 32-20 advantage in points in the paint.
Cobber starters Nelson, Talon Hoffer, Jackson Jangula and Dylan Inniger all had at least 12 points in the game. Nelson finished with a team-high 22 points on a 9-for-17 shooting afternoon. He has scored in double figures in all 12 CC games this year.
Hoffer had his best offensive game of the year. He went 7-for-8 from the floor, 2-for-2 from 3-point range and 1-for-1 from the line to finish with a season-high 17 points. He also grabbed five boards.
Jangula went 4-for-5 from distance and finished with 15 points, while Inniger had 13 points to go along with a team-high seven rebounds.
UP NEXT: The Cobbers will look to improve by 1-percent in their next game when they travel to Macalester on Wednesday, Jan. 26 at 7:15 p.m. The Scots are 7-9 overall and 4-7 in the MIAC, and are one of three teams only one game ahead of CC in the league standings.
