No. 10 Saint John’s Tops Concordia 41–6
Concordia-Moorhead faced a tough test Saturday against nationally ranked Saint John’s, as the Johnnies’ balanced attack and opportunistic defense pulled away for a 41–6 victory. Despite a hard-fought effort and several promising drives, the Cobbers were unable to keep pace with Saint John’s speed and execution on both sides of the ball.
MOORHEAD, Minn. (10/18/25) – Concordia-Moorhead battled hard through the opening half against Saint John's, putting together several promising drives on both sides of the ball. However, the Johnnies capitalized on key opportunities to take a 20–0 lead into halftime.
Saint John's struck first midway through the opening quarter, as quarterback Trey Feeney connected with Carson Hegerle on back-to-back plays, a 46-yard bomb to the goal line followed by a short touchdown pass, to give the Johnnies an early 7–0 advantage. Concordia responded with an encouraging drive of its own, with quarterbacks Jersey Selzler and Nick Walter finding rhythm through the air. Completions to Eric Cockhill and Justin Anderson helped the Cobbers move into scoring range before the drive stalled just shy of the Johnnies 30-yard line.
The Johnnies extended their lead to 14–0 in the closing seconds of the first quarter on a 5-yard touchdown run by Caden Wheeler. In the second quarter, Concordia's defense tightened, forcing Saint John's to settle for field goals rather than touchdowns. A blocked punt gave SJU a short field early in the period, but the Cobber defense held firm, allowing only a 20-yard field goal. Concordia then mounted a sustained drive behind Walter and running back Mason Hughes, advancing inside the SJU 35 before turning the ball over on downs. The secondary continued to make plays, highlighted by an interception from Kyle Mages that stopped a late Johnnie drive. Saint John's added a 47-yard field goal as time expired to make it 20–0 at the half.
The third quarter began with Concordia receiving the kickoff and moving the ball efficiently, but a turnover on downs at the SJU 20 ended the opportunity. Saint John's quickly capitalized, with Feeney connecting with Dylan Wheeler on a 15-yard touchdown pass early in the quarter to push the lead to 27–0. Concordia answered with a sustained drive, highlighted by a 31-yard connection from Selzler to Alejandro Sanchez, but penalties and a sack limited the drive to no points.
In the fourth quarter, Saint John's kept the pressure on. On Concordia's first play, Walter's 5-yard rush ended in a fumble, though Cockhill recovered to give the Cobbers a brief spark. Selzler then connected with Sanchez on a 20-yard touchdown pass, cutting the deficit to 27–6, though the extra point was missed. The Johnnies responded immediately, moving 75 yards in seven plays, capped by a 2-yard touchdown pass from Feeney to Zach Frank, extending the lead to 34–6. Concordia's next drive ended with an interception by Aiden McMahon, setting up another quick Saint John's score. Feeney and Wheeler combined on a 40-yard drive that ended with Wheeler's 8-yard receiving touchdown, giving Saint John's a commanding 41–6 advantage.
Concordia tried to find rhythm in the final minutes, moving the ball into Saint John's territory on a few short gains, but the clock expired with the Johnnies in control at their own 38-yard line. Despite some bright spots on offense, the Cobbers were unable to generate points in the fourth quarter, while Saint John's efficiently closed out the game with multiple scoring drives.
On the stat sheet, Selzler completed 10 passes for 113 yards with one touchdown and one interception, while Walter added 5 completions for 47 yards. Hughes led the team with 13 touches for 27 yards.
