Manic Monday
ST. PAUL, Minn. (4/13/26)---Cue the Bangles as it was a "Manic Monday" for Cobber baseball. Less than 24 hours after they played Macalester in Moorhead, Concordia lost a pair to Hamline in St. Paul. CC fell 3-2 in 8 innings in the opener and gave up five unanswered runs in Game 2 and fell 7-2.
The two defeats drop the Cobbers' season record to 9-14 in all games and 4-6 in the conference. Hamline ups its overall mark to 12-17 and is now 4-8 against MIAC foes.
The first game was the toughest for CC as they led 2-0 heading into the sixth inning, gave up a single run in each of the last two frames and fell in the first extra inning. The Cobbers then led 2-1 in Game 2 before allowing six unanswered runs and lost by five.
Brayden Wolfgram and Drew Dorsey were the only Cobbers to have hits in each game of the twinbill, while Caleb Johnson had the most success of the two starting pitchers on the day and relievers Vann Olson, J Riley Ohm and Cullen Norland all posted scoreless innings in the second game.
Game 1: Concordia 2, Hamline 3 (8 innings)
Concordia started Monday on fire by posting a pair of runs in the first frame in Game 1. Unfortunately those would be the only two scores for CC for the remainder of the contest.
Luke Knudsen opened the game with a walk, moved to second on the ever-popular balk and scored on Wolfgram's single to right center. Mason Henry sacrificed Wolfgram over to second and then Wolfgram scored on an error by the HU pitcher.
CC had a chance to extend its 2-run lead in the fifth when Dorsey connected on a 1-out triple but was left stranded after a pair of outs ended the inning.
The Cobbers also had a runner in scoring position in the sixth and seventh frames but were held off the board.
Johnson kept Hamline from scoring through the first five innings as he didn't allow more than one hit in an inning and only had one base runner advance past second base in that time frame.
He finally allowed a run in the sixth after he hit a pair of batters and walked another to load the bases.
Wyatt Mohr entered the game in the sixth and pitched 1.2 frames before handing the baton to Alex Claussen, who finished off the eighth.
CC had four hits in the opener with Knudsen, Wolfgram, Jack Primus and Dorsey all recording single-hit games.
Game 2: Concordia 2, Hamline 7
The nightcap turned in the fourth frame when the Pipers plated four runners to break open a 1-run game.
Hamline opened Game 2 with a single run in the first before CC responded with two runs in the third to take a 2-1 lead.
Tanner Nowacki opened the inning with a double to right center and then Dorsey and Knudsen got on to load the bases with one out. Wolfgram scored the first run on a fielder's choice groundout and Henry brought home the go-ahead run on an infield single.
Hamline countered the Cobbers' 2-run frame with a 2-spot of their own in the bottom half of the inning and then broke the game open with the 4-run fourth.
The Cobbers came up with five hits in the nightcap, and once again had five different players post single-hit games.
Ben Trutwin started Game 2 and gave way to Olson in the fourth. Olson recorded the final two outs in the fourth and was relieved by Ohm, who pitched a scoreless fifth. Norland kept the Pipers off the board in the sixth despite giving up a leadoff double.
Concordia will have a 5-day break before returning to the road to take on Augsburg on Saturday, Apr. 18 at venerable Parade Stadium in Minneapolis.
