Cobbers Cap 2025 Season With 9th-Inning Win
ST. PETER, Minn. (5/03/25)---Concordia posted a 3-run rally in the final two innings of their doubleheader with Wartburg and came away with an 8-7 win in the final game of the 2025 season.
The Cobbers lost 15-5 in the opener played at Gustavus, but then went through a rollercoaster ride in Game 2 before earning the 1-run victory.
Concordia finishes the season with a 19-20 record, while Wartburg moves to 20-18.
Game 1: Concordia 5, Wartburg 15
Big-run innings cost the Cobbers in the opener. Wartburg was able to record four consecutive crooked-number innings to take Game 1.
The Knights led 1-0 after three frames, but then scored four times in the fourth, added three more in the fifth, four more in the sixth and finished off the streak with four in the seventh.
The Cobbers were able to get single runs in the fourth and fifth innings and added a 3-run seventh inning.
Concordia had eight hits in the first game, with senior Caiden Kjelstrom leading the way with a 3-for-4 stat line. He also scored two runs and drove in a pair with RBI singles in the fifth and seventh innings.
Justin Kloster, Dylan Gertken, Isaac Henkemeyer-Howe, Nick Pederson and Brock Lerfald had the other hits for CC with Henkemeyer-Howe and David Dorsey driving in the other runs in the contest. Lerfald's single up the middle in the seventh inning was his first college base knock.
Game 2: Concordia 8, Wartburg 7
Concordia led 4-0 to start the finale, fell behind 6-4 and 7-5 before rallying in the eighth and ninth innings to record the 8-7 win in the last game of the season.
Sophomore Ben Shumansky was the catalyst for the Cobber offense. He finished the game by going 4-for-5 with three doubles and four runs scored.
Drew Dorsey opened the scoring for CC when he doubled home a pair of runs in the second inning. Sophomore Tanner Nowacki had a milestone moment in the fourth inning when he connected on his first collegiate home run. His 2-run shot over the right-field fence scored Shumansky and gave the Cobbers a 4-0 lead.
Luke Van Erp's sacrifice fly in the fifth brought CC within two runs after the Knights took the lead with a 5-run fifth inning.
Concordia set up the 9th-inning drama with a lone score in the eighth.
To make the final inning of the season even more exciting, the Cobbers were able to score both of their runs with two outs in the ninth.
Luke Knudsen reached on a fielder's choice ground ball to push the out total to two. Brayden Wolfgram got a key walk to advance Knudsen to second, and then Shumansky reached on an infield error, which ended up scoring both runs to give CC the lead.
Sophomore Wyatt Mohr pitched the final 2.0 innings to record his first win of the season. He held Wartburg off the board, didn't allow a hit and struck out four of the six batters he faced.
The Cobbers outhit the Knights 9-7 in Game 2. Shumansky was the only Cobber to post a multiple-hit game.
Stat Leaders: Kjelstrom finished the season with a team-high .338 batting average. He also led the team in hits. Thomas Horan was second in average (.333) and led the team in slugging percentage (.484), doubles (12), RBI (35), total bases (61) and stolen bases (14). Knudsen was the Concordia leader in on-base percentage (.471) and walks (30). Brock Anderson led all starting pitchers in ERA, He posted a 3.05 ERA in 20.2 innings pitched. Wolfgram and Erholtz were the team leaders in wins with three.
