Game 2 Offensive Surge Earns Cobbers Split At Carleton
NORTHFIELD, Minn. (4/26/25)---Concordia split its two road games at Carleton on Saturday. The Cobber fell 5-2 in the opener, and then the offense ignited in the second game, which enabled CC to roll to a 12-1 win in 7 innings.
The split leaves the Cobbers' overall record at 18-7. Concordia is now 9-9 in MIAC play. The Knights snapped a 4-game losing streak with their win in Game 1. They are 9-17 in league games and 3-13 against conference opponents.
Game 1: Concordia 2, Carleton 5
The Cobbers led 2-0 after three innings of play in the opener, but Carleton used a 4-run fourth inning and tacked on one more in the fifth to earn the 3-run win.
Concordia struck for a single run in the first inning on an Isaac Henkemeyer-Howe sacrifice fly that scored Luke Knudsen from third after Knudsen led off the game with a single up the middle.
The Cobbers doubled the lead in the third when Henkemeyer-Howe drove in his second run without a hit. He brought home Knudsen for the second time in the game on a ground out to second base that allowed the speedy Knudsen to score from third.
Concordia had two hits in the first three innings and only had one more in the final five frames.
The Cobbers were outhit 5-3 in Game 1. Knudsen, Caiden Kjelstrom and Ben Shumansky had the base hits, and all were of the single variety.
Alex Rudquist pitched the first 3.2 innings and didn't allow an earned run. He gave up four runs on only one hit and struck out two. Rudquist has only allowed two earned runs and five hits in his last 11.0 innings pitched.
Dylan Erholtz went the final 2.1 frames and gave up one run on four hits and fanned three.
Game 2: Concordia 12, Carleton 1
The big-run innings belonged to Concordia in the finale. The Cobber duplicated their feat of a single run in the first inning but then went off for five runs in the fourth and six more in the fifth to finish the game off in only seven innings due to the 10-run rule.
Senior Thomas Horan was the main offensive catalyst for Concordia in Game 2. He went 4-for-4 and drove in four runs. He had a bases-loaded triple in the fifth inning, that three of the six runs in the inning.
Knudsen had a 2-run double in the fourth and was 1-for-3 with two runs scored in the nightcap.
Henkemeyer-Howe, Mason Henry and Zack Ehnstrom all had 2-hit games in Game 2. Henkemeyer-Howe was 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Henry went 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored and Ehnstrom was 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Sophomore Grant Anderson kept the Carleton offense from getting on track. He pitched the first 5.0 innings and only gave up three hits. He didn't concede a run and struck out four. His quality outing was good for his second win of the season.
Gavin Gast and Ethan Beyer both went 1.0 innings and didn't give up an earned run.
Concordia will close out the MIAC season when they travel to Collegeville to take on St. John's on Monday, Apr, 28 at 2:30 p.m.
