Four Straight Double-Digit Run Totals? You Betcha
What’s better than posting double-digit scoring totals in two straight games? How about doing it in four consecutive contests? Less than 24 hours after sweeping Macalester 11-5 and 17-7, the Cobber Clout Crew doubled down on its double-digit run totals and blew past Hamline 11-1 and 12-3.
MOORHEAD, Minn. (4/10/25)---What's better than posting double-digit scoring totals in two straight games? How about doing it in four consecutive contests?
Less than 24 hours after sweeping Macalester 11-5 and 17-7, the Cobber Clout Crew doubled down on its double-digit run totals and blew past Hamline 11-1 and 12-3.
In the last 48 hours, Concordia has lit up the scoreboard 51 times, recorded 54 hits and moved up from last in the MIAC at 0-4 to 4-4 in conference play and tied for sixth place.
While the offense put up the headline-catching numbers, it was junior pitcher Brock Anderson who came away with the "feel-good" story of the sweep over Hamline. Saddled with injuries over his first two seasons at Concordia, Anderson has slowly made his way back to 100%, and on Thursday, he gave the fans a glimpse of his outstanding ability.
Anderson got the start in the first game and proceeded to fashion a complete-game, 6-hitter and struck out five. The reward for grinding his way through the 21 outs was his first collegiate victory.
The other "big ticket" item from Thursday's two wins is senior Caiden Kjelstrom's on-base streak. Kjelstrom had a single hit in each game against the Pipers and has reached base safely in 33 consecutive games – a streak believed to be a program record.
Game 1: Concordia 11, Hamline 1
Anderson worked around single hits in the first and second frames and waited until the Cobber bats arrived at Bucky Burgau Field. The ETA of the bat bag was around 2:10 when Concordia broke the first game wide open with an 8-run fourth frame.
The Cobbers scored the eight runs on five hits and sent 10 players to the plate. The big hit came from shortstop Thomas Horan, who drove in three runs with a 2-out single to right field. Fellow Moorhead Spud senior Isaac Henkemeyer-Howe followed with a rare triple to score Horan and cap the 8-run extravaganza.
CC would follow with two runs in the fifth and one more in the sixth. Freshman infielder Luke Knudsen drove in both runs in the fifth with a 2-out double and Drew Dorsey plated the run in the sixth.
The Cobbers held a 9-6 edge in hits in Game 1. Ben Shumansky came up with the only multiple-hit game of the opener. He was 2-for-4 and scored a run from the No.5 spot in the batting order.
Game 2: Concordia 12, Hamline 3
Concordia carried over its offensive momentum from the first game to the first two innings of the finale. CC scored four times in the first and added four more in the second to open up an 8-run cushion and give starting pitcher Brayden Wolfgram a big insurance policy to work with.
Horan posted a 2-run double in the first and, like the first game, scored on Henkemeye-Howe's triple in the very next at-bat. Feel free to head to the window if you owned a ticket that had Henkemeyer-Howe coming up with a triple in each game of the DH. He entered the day with two career triples to his name.
Luke Van Erp came up with a 2-run single to lead the Cobbers' 4-run second inning.
CC finished off the scoreline with single runs in the fifth, sixth and eighth innings.
The Cobbers pounded out 14 hits in Game 2 with Horan, Henkemeyer-Howe, Shumansky, Drew Dorsey and Van Erp all putting up 2-hit games and accounting for 10 of the team's 14 base knocks.
Wolfgram eased his way through the Piper lineup and picked up his third win of the year. He didn't give up a run and allowed four hits in 5.0 innings of work.
Brett Engelmeyer pitched the sixth and seventh innings and Thad Lieser came on to throw 2.0 scoreless innings and didn't give up a hit.
Record Watch: Horan was 3-for-6 with six RBI in the two games against Hamline. He upped his average to over .300 for the first time this season, has a .312 average and now has 190 career hits. He needs eight more base knocks to surpass Andy Gravy as the school's all-time hit leader.
Streak Stuff: Besides Kjelstrom's 31-game on-base string, Knudsen extended his hit streak to a team-high 13 games. He continues to lead the team with a .385 average. Kjelstrom also has an 11-game hit streak, and Horan is up to seven games…Wolfgram pushed his scoreless streak to 14.1 innings and only needs 45 more scoreless frames to best the MLB record of 59.0 scoreless innings set by LA Dodgers' legend Orel Hershiser in 1988. The first-year hurler from Thompson, N.D. hasn't allowed a run in his three appearances this year, and opposing batters are only hitting .154 against the righty.
