Cobbers Open Conference Play In Winona
Concordia started slowly in each game of its conference-opening doubleheader at St. Mary’s and lost 5-0 and 10-4. The Cobbers never led in either game as they gave up three runs in the first inning of Game 1 and conceded nine runs in the third frame of the second game as they were swept in Winona.
WINONA, Minn. (3/28/25)---Concordia started slowly in each game of its conference-opening doubleheader at St. Mary's and lost 5-0 and 10-4.
The Cobbers never led in either game as they gave up three runs in the first inning of Game 1 and conceded nine runs in the third frame of the second game as they were swept in Winona.
Concordia is now 8-8 in all games, while the Cardinals move to 11-8.
Game 1: Concordia 0, St. Mary's 5
St. Mary's jumped on the Cobbers early in the opener. They were able to plate three runs on three hits in the very first inning.
The Cardinals extended the lead to 5-0 in the third when they strung together four consecutive 2-out singles that plated a pair of runs.
Concordia's best opportunity to score came in the sixth inning. Isaac Henkemeyer-Howe laced a 1-out single to left field and advanced to third on a 2-out single from Luke Knudsen. The rally ended after a fly out to right field in the next at-bat.
St. Mary's held an 8-6 edge in hits in Game 1. First-year third baseman Brayden Wolfgram had the lone multiple-hit game for CC. He went 2-for-3. Caiden Kjelstrom, David Dorsey, Henkemeyer-Howe and Knudsen had the other base knocks for the Cobbers.
Jacoby Nold got the start on the hill for Concordia and pitched the first 4.0 innings. He allowed five runs on four hits and struck out two. Junior Brock Anderson entered in the fifth and pitched 2.0 scoreless innings. He didn't give up a hit and fanned one batter.
Game 2: Concordia 4, St. Mary's 10
The Cobbers outscored the Cardinals 3-1 for eighth of the nine innings in Game 2, but it was the 9-run third frame that made the difference.
St. Mary's opened the scoring with a single run in the bottom of the second before the Cobbers countered with their first run of the day in the top of the third. Senior Justin Kloster opened the inning with a leadoff single to right field. He moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt from Kjelstrom and took third on a ground out to shortstop. Kloster eventually came home on a wild pitch.
The Cardinals sent 14 batters to the plate and scored their nine runs on six hits. They didn't have an extra-base hit in the inning, as all six knocks were singles.
Concordia cut into the deficit by scoring two runs in the fourth and one more in the fifth.
Wolfgram and Kloster had RBI singles in the fourth and Ben Shumansky came through with a single to center field that plated the run in the fifth.
The Cobbers had nine hits in the finale, with Kloster and Shumansky posting multiple-hit games. Kloster was 3-for-4 and had an RBI and a run scored, while Shumansky went 2-for-5 with an RBI.
Concordia used five pitchers in Game 2. Grant Anderson was the starter and the trio of Brett Engelmeyer, Dylan Erholtz and J Riley Ohm combined to pitch 6.0 scoreless innings.
Englemeyer went 4.0 frames, allowed four hits and struck out two, while Erholtz and Ohm both shut SMU down for a single inning.
Concordia will look to get back on the winning track when they play at Bethel on Tuesday, Apr. 1 at 2:30 p.m.
