WINTER HAVEN, Fla. (3/03/25)---Concordia got off to the start it wanted on Day 2 in Florida but a 5-run sixth inning proved to be to much to overcome as the Cobbers lost 7-1 to St. Vincent (Pa.) in a single 9-inning game.
The Cobbers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when leadoff hitter Caiden Kjelstrom singled to left field, advanced to second when Thomas Horan walked and crossed the plate on a Ben Shumansky sacrifice fly to right field.
Unfortunately for Concordia that would be their only run of the day. St. Vincent was able to tie the game with a single run in the top of the third. They took a 2-1 lead when they scored the eventual game-winning run in the fourth and then used the game-breaking 5-run sixth to pull away for the victory.
The Cobbers' best chance to score after the first frame came in the eighth when Kjelstrom collected a 1-out single and went to second when Horan was hit by a pitch. A fielder's choice sent Kjelstrom to third but he was stranded there when a 2-out ground ball to the shortstop ended the scoring chance.
Concordia was outhit 8-5 in the game with Kjelstrom leading CC with two hits as he went 2-for-4. Shumansky, Tanner Nowacki and Zack Ehnstrom had the other base knocks for the Cobbers.
Grant Anderson, Thad Lieser and Ethan Beyer all saw their first action on the mound for ther Cobbers. Anderson went the first 5.0 innings and gave up five earned runs on seven hits. Beyer pitched the final three fames and didn't allow a hit and walked only one.
The Cobbers will look to get back on the winning track when they face Moravian (Pa.) in a doubleheader beginning at 10 a.m. (cst) in Auburndale, Fla.
