JAMESTOWN, N.D. (4/05/21)---In a final score that was more fitting for a Cobber/Jimmie football game, Concordia baseball dropped an 18-13 decision at Jamestown.

The Cobbers scored a touchdown and converted the 2-point conversion in the third to take a 11-3 lead but then allowed a pair of TDs with missed extra points in the fifth to fall for the second time against Jamestown this season. The loss is only the second in the last six for the Cobbers who slide to 7-4. Jamestown wins for the eighth time in the last 10 games and is now 21-12.

The game in Jamestown was also reminiscent of a day game at Wrigley with the wind blowing out. The teams combined for nine home runs, 15 extra-base hits and 30 total hits.

Fans knew they were in for an offensive showcase from the very first inning. The Cobbers scored three times in their half of the opening inning and then the Jimmies matched that with a trio of runs in the bottom to tie the score at 3-3.

Concordia's big-run inning in the third came courtesy of five hits and one long ball. Thomas Horan opened the frame by going yard over the right-field fence. It would be the first of his two hits and RBI in the inning.

Freshman Chrisanto D'Agostino came through with a 2-run single to left field and senior catcher Jack Naugle had a 3-run double down the left-field line. Matt Gruber had the other hit in the inning and Dawson Leer recorded the other RBI.

Jamestown got a pair of runs back in the fourth to bring the score to 11-5 and then CC played a single run in the top of the fifth to take a 12-5 lead.

The game did a 180-degree turn in the bottom of the fifth when Jamestown scored 13 runs on 12 hits and cranked out four home tuns.

The Cobbers got their final run of the game when Gruber hit a 2-out home run to center field.

Concordia's 13 runs are a single-game high for 2021. CC also posted 13 hits which marks the second straight game they have put up a baker's dozen hits and the fifth time in the last six games they have come through with a double-digit hit total.

The Cobbers had seven players get hits with four batters posting multiple-hit games. Former Moorhead Spuds Horan and D'Agostino led the way with three hits each. Horan was 3-for-4 and drove in a pair of runs while D'Agostino went 3-for-5 and had five RBI.

Gruber and Sean McGuire had 2-hit games. Gruber was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and McGuire went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

A FIFTH OF FIRSTS: A quartet of Cobber hitters recorded collegiate first on the fifth day of April. Horan and Gruber pounded out their first collegiate home runs while D'Agostino and Naugle both recorded their first collegiate hit and RBI.

DOUBLE-DIGIT STREAK: Gruber upped his team-leading hit streak to 10 games on Monday. He was held without a hit in the season opener but has been on base for the last 10 contests. Gruber has multiple-hit games in five straight and in seven total this season. He upped his team-leading batting average to .465 and his hit total to 20. He is now sixth in the MIAC in average and tied for second in hits.

HIT MAN HORAN: Horan's 3-hit game moved him into second place on the team in hitting. He now has a .447 average which is also seventh in the MIAC. Horan also upped his team-leading TBI total to 11 which is also seventh in the conference. Horan now has three multiple-TBI games this year.

UP NEXT: Concordia is scheduled to host St. John's in a doubleheader on Wednesday, Apr. 7 at 2:30 p.m. The Johnnies are 10-4 on the year but 0-3 in MIAC play.
