Nation's Best Shot Put Mark leads Cobbers At Carleton

NORTHFIELD, Minn. (4/05/14)—Cherae Reeves climbed back on top of the Division III mountain in the shot put as she won the event at the Carleton Invite and helped Concordia to a second-place team finish.
Reeves finished with a nation's best distance of 46-00.50 in the shot put and the Cobbers ended the meet with a total team score of 124.0 points. That final score was 37.0 shy of meet winner St. Benedict and 16 points better than host Carleton who finished in third place.
Reeves had the best mark in all of Division III in the shot put after last weekend's opening meet of the outdoor season. However, she was overtaken by a pair of competitors during the week. Reeves then countered her opening-meet distance of 44-11.00 with a toss of 46.00.50. That distance is four inches farther than the No.2 competitor in the nation. Reeves also posted a top 3 finish at the meet in the javelin. She had a distance of 104-03.00 and placed third in the event.
Reeves' Indoor National Meet teammate Hilary Thompson recorded the only other event wins at Carleton. Thompson claimed the top spot in both the long jump and triple jump. She had a distance of 17-07.00 in the long jump to win the event by almost a full foot. Thompson then put up a mark of 37-01.00 in the triple jump which won the event by almost three feet. Both finishing marks were shy of last weekend's first-meet totals. Thompson is currently seventh in Division III with a jump of 37-07.75.
A pair of non-related freshman Petersons posted seven different top 5 finishes on the day. Ruth Peterson had top 5 finishes in the 100-meter dash, the 200 meters and triple jump while Emma Peterson had top 5 finishes in both hurdle events, the long jump and the high jump. Ruth Peterson's best finish came in the 100-meter dash where she placed second in a time of 13.42. She was fifth in the 200 meters at 28.02 and third in the triple jump with a final distance of 33-05.75. Peterson's mark in the triple jump is an outdoor best this season.
Emma Peterson had a busy day in Northfield as she competed in four different events. She had a trio of second-place finishes and was fourth in the long jump. Her two second-place finishes in track events came in the hurdles. She raced to a 17.30 in the 110-meter hurdles and clocked a 68.63 in the 400-meter hurdles. Peterson's time in the 400-meter hurdle race is a season best. She then went on to finish second in the high jump with a height of 5-0.25. Her distance of 16-03.00 in the long jump is also a season best.
The other top 3 finish for the Cobbers was turned in by sophomore Katie Rosenfeldt who posted a time of 72.31 in the 400-meter hurdles and placed third.
Olivia Johnson competed in all four throwing events at the meet and came away with a quartet of top 7 finishes. She was fourth in the shot put and javelin and came away with a fifth-place finish in the hammer and a seventh-place outing in the discus.
Concordia will start to get on their regular outdoor training and competition schedule. The next event for the Cobbers will be at the NDSU Bison Open on Saturday, Apr. 12.
