Another 1-Goal Game With Wis.-Superior
Concordia and Wis.-Superior played their third straight 1-goal game of the season as the Yellowjackets were able to score in the final minute of play and come away with a 3-2 win.
MOORHEAD, Minn. (1/14/25)---Make it a third straight 1-goal game between Concordia and Wis.-Superior. The Cobbers and Yellowjackets have played three times this season and all three contests have been decided by a single goal.
On Tuesday, Concordia and Superior appeared to be headed to overtime but a goal by the Yellowjackets with 53 seconds remaining in regulation sent the Cobbers to a 3-2 loss. It was CC's third straight 1-goal loss to the Yellowjackets.
Senior Jerica Friese gave Concordia a perfect start to the rare midweek non-conference game when she batted in the puck at the 54-second mark of the opening period. Friese was camped on top of the crease when the puck was knocked up in the air after a goalmouth scramble. She was able to turn and bat the puck from waist height into the right corner of the net.
The first-minute goal continued Friese's scoring streak. She has netted five goals in the last six games and has scored in three of the past four games. Friese has six goals on the season which are second-most on the squad.
Madilyn Skogman and Abbey Reule earned the assists on the play. For Skogman it was her second assist in as many games.
Wis.-Superior (9-6-2) took a 2-1 lead into the first break after tying the game at 11:47 and then jumping out to a 2-1 lead 2:41 later.
Neither team was able to get on the board in the second period and through the first 12 minutes of the third period. Reule broke the 38-minute scoreless streak as she was able to bury a rebound from the bottom of the right faceoff circle.
Reule had the rebound find her stick inside the right faceoff circles, dragged the puck from backhand to forehand around a Yellowjacket defender and lifted a wrist shot over the left shoulder of the UWS goalie as she was falling to the ice.
The goal at 12:34 was her fourth of the year and Friese returned the favor from the first goal by getting her second assist of the season on the play.
Both teams threatened to take a 3-2 lead in the next six minutes before Superior was staked to a power play chance after CC took a checking penalty at 17:29.
The Yellowjackets could only one shot in the first 1:30 of the extra skater advantage but then scored on a rebound at 19:03.
Concordia pulled goalie Hailee Bailey after winning the ensuing faceoff and had a trio of shots in the final 40 seconds of play but couldn't come up with the game-tying goal.
The Cobbers outshot Superior 12-6 in the third period, while the Yellowjackets came away with s 27-19 advantage for the three periods of play.
Concordia was 0-for-3 on the power play and UWS was 1-for-3 with the lone PP goal serving as the game winner.
Bailey made 24 saves in the game in her third start of the season.
Concordia will have nothing but conference games for the remainder of the season and will start the MIAC streak when they host St. Scholastica on Friday, Jan. 17 at 7 p.m.
