Same Start, Different Finish In Series Finale
The start was the same, but the finish was different in the Cobbers’ second game against No.9-ranked Wis.-Eau Claire. A day after the Cobbers upset the Blugolds, Concordia once again notched an early goal to take a 1-0 lead but then gave up five unanswered goals and lost 5-1 to settle for a split in the series.
EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (1/11/25)---The start was the same, but the finish was different in the Cobbers' second game against No.9-ranked Wis.-Eau Claire.
A day after the Cobbers upset the Blugolds, Concordia once again notched an early goal to take a 1-0 lead but then gave up five unanswered goals and lost 5-1 to settle for a split in the series.
The loss drops the Cobbers' record to 2-10 on the season while Eau Claire moves to 11-5-0.
Concordia came out on Saturday and jumped to a 1-0 lead in the first 6 minutes of the opening period play. On Friday, Malorie Anderson earned her first college assist on CC's opener in the opening period of play which allowed the Cobbers to take a 1-0 lead into the first intermission. Madilyn Skogman duplicated Anderson's feat in Game 2 when she set up senior Jerica Friese for her first collegiate helper.
Skogman was able to win possession on the forecheck. She took the puck from a Blugold defender in the right faceoff circle and fired a shot on net. The Eau Claire goalie stopped Skogman's initial shot, but Friese was in the right spot at the right time and slammed home the rebound.
The goal at 5:16 continued Friese's recent scoring success. She has now scored in three of the last five games and her five total goals are second-most on Concordia.
Eau Claire opened up the game in the second period when they scored three goals in the first 6:09 of play. They added a fourth goal at 14:10 of the middle period and finished off the scoring midway through the third frame.
One of the key factors in the game came from special teams where UWEC went 3-for-7 on power play chances while CC was 0-for-4.
Concordia was outshot 38-25 in the series finale. Skogman led CC with four shots on goal. Friese and Memphis Mertens both had three shots on net.
Ashlea Arvidson made 33 saves for the Cobbers.
Concordia will return home and host another WIAC opponent. The Cobbers will square off against Wis.-Superior on Tuesday, Jan. 14 at 5 p.m. in the final non-conference game of the year for CC.
