NORTHFIELD, Minn. (9/21/24)---It was a combination of heat and hills that proved to be a challenge for the Cobbers in their first 8K of the season.
The Cobbers had to worry about the heat and the hills at the St. Olaf Invitational on Saturday. A course, not for the faint of heart, that has steep hills and long stretches of no shade, combined with temps reaching close to 80 degrees and no wind, make it one of the tougher courses in the MIAC.
The demanding course will also serve as the host for the 2024 MIAC Championship Meet at the beginning of November.
Despite those challenges, Concordia placed 12th out of 22 teams and finished sixth among the nine MIAC teams competing.
Brady Goss led the Cobbers for the second straight meet, clocking a time of 26:35. That time was good enough for a 27th-place finish, marking the second straight meet that Goss placed in the top 30.
Following behind him was his brother, Tyler Goss. He was the only other Cobber runner to place in the top 100. Tyler Goss clocked a 27:42.
Junior Carter Ferber and sophomore Brady Andrews finished inside the top 200. Ferber was CC's No.3 finisher coming in at 28:28, and Andrews was CC's No.4 finisher coming in for a time of 29:49. Both Ferber and Andrews were 6 seconds faster than their opening 8k last year.
Rounding out the Top 5 was Lucas Hinojos, placing 214th with a time of 31:16.
The finishing times marked the first time since September 23, 2017 that the Cobbers didn't have all five of their top runners post a time under 30 minutes.
Brady Goss is confident the team will bounce back. "We'll just train a little harder and get back at it next race."
The Cobbers will have to wait two weeks before their next meet as they race at the University of Jamestown Jimmie Invite on Oct. 4 at 4 p.m.
