From Curiosity to Wonder

Sunday 29 August – Sunday 19 September

While humankind has always had the impulse to collect objects from our world, a surge of collecting in 15th and 16th century Europe inspired Kunst-und-Wunderkammern, or cabinets of art and marvels (also commonly known as Cabinets of Curiosity or Wonder).  Royalty and aristocrats filled their palaces with rooms of extraordinary, mysterious, and beautiful objects, both human and nature-made.  These cabinets formed the foundation for the modern museum, celebrating the genius of artists and scientists as well as the wonders of God’s creation.

Inspired by Concordia College’s 2010 Faith, Reason, and World Affairs Symposium, “Awakening to Wonder: Re-enchantment in a Post-Secular Age,” the art exhibition From Curiosity to Wonder at the Cyrus M. Running Gallery asks artists among Concordia faculty, students, alumni, and the Fargo-Moorhead community to show us where they continue to find wonder and mystery in our world—a world of unprecedented scientific achievement and technology that often seems to leave little room for enchantment.

Public Reception:  Tuesday 14 September, 4:30-6PM.  Heather Hardester, curator of the exhibit and director of the Museum Studies program will speak about the exhibition at 5PM.
